CMU Schatz and Marketplace Dining
- Project: Dining Renovations
- Owner: Carnegie Mellon University
- Location: Pittsburgh, PA
- Architect: NEXT Architecture
Landau Building Company was hired as the construction manager for the Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) Marketplace and Schatz Dining renovations. The project, located at the Jared L. Cohon Center, was split into two parts to accommodate the academic year/activities, with Schatz Dining completed during 2019 and MarketPlace finishing in 2020. Schatz Dining includes the President’s dining area, so creating the desired atmosphere of a sleek, elevated dining experience was one of the main priorities. Breakfast, brunch, and dinner are an all-you-can-eat buffet on the weekends, but lunch is reserved for staff, graduate students, and faculty during the week for the academic year. The seating/dining areas were all upgraded with new finishes, and the kitchen underwent a complete remodel, including new equipment. Schatz Dining Room also features a Teaching Kitchen with television monitors, offering food demonstrations and cooking classes to better connect the campus community to the staff. During renovations, Landau had to access spaces underneath the Schatz dining, which included racquetball courts and offices that provided a unique challenge in itself and schedule closures.
